Concern regarding sexually transmitted diseases has been focused lately on a recent addition to the group, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, which remains mysterious and incurable. Yet syphilis, the oldest such condition known and one that is well understood and eminently treatable, continues to be a major problem. Drs Siegel and Washington review the biology, epidemiology, disease spectrum, diagnosis, and treatment of syphilis and emphasize the public health importance of accurate reporting when cases are identified.
