New broad-spectrum antibiotics have recently become available for the treatment of complex polymicrobial pneumonia. These drugs may be useful in treating nosocomial and nursing home- acquired pneumonia because of the inherent antibacterial resistance seen in organisms in this patient population. In the following article, Dr Roselle discusses the advantages of these newer agents as well as the precautions required with their use.
