Even for the healthy, daily life on the streets is fraught with hardship; for the diabetic, the homeless life-style has “inherent dangers that act synergistically with diabetes to jeopardize health.” Thus, healthcare providers must be knowledgeable not only about the disease and its management but also about the realities of street life. According to Dr Martinez-Weber, it takes considerable caring and creativity to treat the homeless diabetic patient successfully.
