Many athletes follow a strict and rigorous schedule of sporting activities today, and they are usually impatient to resume their schedule when it is interrupted. Infectious mononucleosis requires a period of inactivity, even after signs and symptoms of the infection have abated, because of accompanying splenomegaly and possible splenic rupture. Dr Haines reviews current findings on the interval between onset of illness and safe return to sports. He also addresses other complications, diagnostic procedures, and treatment.
