Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as defined by the Centers for Disease Control is only one in an array of diseases caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Dr Hollander reviews the many manifestations of HIV-related diseases including opportunistic infections, neoplasms, autoimmune phenomena, and neurologic syndromes, and notes the continuing problems in finding effective treatment.
