Deterioration in oral health can not only impair oral function but also damage the psychological well-being of aging persons, so good oral healthcare takes on an even greater importance in the later stages of life. Dr Gambucci reviews the normal oral changes expected with aging and outlines the effects of a number of diseases on dental-oral health in older adults. He points out that while aging cannot be treated, oral disease in older adults usually can—and should be—to ensure their continued independence and fullest participation in life's activities.
