Psychological interventions, which may be performed by all caregivers, can contribute substantially to relieving the distress of delirious patients and need not be excessively time-consuming. Dr Richeimer reports a representative case and describes interventions designed to help patients compensate for cognitive impairments and deal with uncomfortable and potentially overwhelming emotions.
