For many years digitalis and diuretics were the only drugs effective in treating chronic congestive heart failure. The acceptance in the past decade of vasodilating drugs and the recent advent of bipyridine derivatives represent important advances in the pharmacotherapy of congestive heart failure. Dr Alpert focuses this discussion on the clinical application of the latter two groups of drugs in treatment of left ventricular failure.
