Arterial embolism is a devastating occurrence requiring prompt action to prevent death or limb loss. Immediate heparinization, early embolectomy, and perhaps additional surgery are indicated. In their article, Drs Chin and Fogarty delineate these procedures. They begin by reviewing the causes and presentation of arterial embolism and explaining how to distinguish it from acute thrombosis and deep venous thrombosis.
