Ventricular arrhythmias are common in the elderly. As discussed by Dr Dunbar, candidates for therapy are selected on the basis of their risk for sudden death. Ventricular arrhythmias are characterized using ambulatory monitoring or electro-physiologic studies, and aggravating factors are identified and corrected. Appropriate antiarrhythmic drugs can then be chosen by considering likely efficacy, pharmacokinetics, and potential side effects.
