Americans consume large amounts of sugar and sugar substitutes to satisfy their sweet tooth. Over the years, the public has been confused about the safety of these substances. As a result, many patients turn to primary care physicians for answers about sweeteners. This article provides information about the currently available sweeteners—sugar, saccharin, and aspartame—and guidelines for their use by various patient populations.
