When to suspect, how to manage

Fetomaternal hemorrhage occurs in at least 50% of all pregnancies but is often overlooked as a cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Laboratory techniques for diagnosis include use of the Kleihauer-Betke stain and measurement of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein. Dr Cardwell discusses possible causes and perinatal complications and presents management options for pregnancies complicated by fetomaternal hemorrhage.
