Vaccination represents one of the oldest and most effective forms of immunologic therapy. However, the complexity of an immune response often precludes full understanding of requirements for successful vaccination. The authors discuss the use of live (attenuated) and killed (inactivated) vaccines, the possible adverse effects, and the potential for the development of epidemics when vaccination rates fall.
