Management of the patient with ascites

Ascites can be associated with several disorders, some of them serious, so establishing its cause is crucial. Treatment of the condition is most often with a diuretic and must be carefully controlled so that too much fluid is not lost too quickly, which could lead to further problems. Dr Bruckstein summarizes what is known about the etiology of ascites, methods used in differential diagnosis, and treatment alternatives.
