Early diagnosis of many serious pulmonary conditions, including bronchogenic carcinoma and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, is possible with fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Complications, such as pneumothorax and hemorrhage, are relatively uncommon, and absolute contraindications are few. Drs Van Gundy and Boylen review the current benefits and risks of this procedure, which they believe is both safe and productive when patients are properly selected.
