Although a seizure can be terrifying, especially for the observer, often it does not herald a problem as severe as the signs indicate. Most seizure disorders occur in childhood and are self-limiting. Dr Holmes describes the use of electroencephalography and brain-imaging procedures to differentiate seizure types and rule out pathologic conditions. He also provides information on using the carefully established diagnosis to determine the risk of recurrence and advisability of treatment.
