Persons who have been chemically dependent face constant danger of relapse brought on by medications. Certain intoxicating drugs will cause pharmacologic dependence and should be used in these patients only for a specific medical condition and during hospitalization. Some nonintaxicating drugs that affect mood may create a prerelapse state, and their use warrants caution. The authors list psychoactive drugs and their effects and give recommendations on which to use in managing specific medical problems in chemically dependent persons.
