Stories of suffering and death from dysentery have been recorded for many generations. Unfortunately, one source—Entamoeba histolytica—continues to infect people when drinking water becomes contaminated by sewage. Dr Holtan describes who is most likely to encounter die parasite, how the infection colonizes in the body, and how diagnosis is made through recognition of symptoms and proper testing. He also identifies treatment and preventive measures.
