Exercise-related sudden death is a slight but real threat to conditioned middle-aged Americans. The deaths of prominent athletes Jim Fixx, Don Rogers, Len Bias, and “Pistol Pete” Maravich bear much-publicized testimony to that fact The record number of Americans who now regularly engage in vigorous physical activity clearly adds impetus to the need to identify the causes of this phenomenon. In this article, Dr Waller discloses the cardiovascular abnormalities at fault and offers a prescription for healthful exercise.
