Pulmonary embolism is a common clinical problem, particularly in hospitalized patients, and its presenting manifestations are deceivingly nonspecific. Early diagnosis is important because untreated pulmonary embolism tends to recur and may be fatal Dr Wenger reviews the often confusing array of signs and symptoms and suggests an algorithm for diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary embolism.
