Questions regarding the appropriate care of the hypertensive surgical patient arise often in medical practice. Intraoperatively, the prime responsibility falls on the anesthesiologist, of course, but careful preoperative and postoperative management by the primary care physician are integral to a successful outcome. Drs Thompson and Ampel offer recommendations based on a review of the literature and their own clinical experience.
