Mental deterioration in an older person does not necessarily signal dementia, although the risk of this condition developing increases sharply with age. Likewise, the diagnosis of dementia should not signal hopelessness, because some forms of the illness can be successfully treated. Accurate diagnosis is essential to distinguish whether dementia is reversible or treatable. The steps involved in arriving at a clear diagnosis and the treatment options available are the topics of this article.
