Hepatic cell adenoma may be induced by prolonged use of oral contraceptives, and its presenting symptoms may be spontaneous rupture and hemoperitoneum. Surgery to control hemorrhage and discontinuation of oral contraceptive use result in regression of the tumor. Drs Ferrara and Rutland report a case of ruptured hepatic cell adenoma and discuss the link between liver tumors and oral contraceptive therapy.
