Aging causes many physiologic changes that affect drug tolerance, and usual adult doses of antidepressants may result in excessively high serum levels in elderly patients. Because depression and cardiovascular disease often must be treated simultaneously in the elderly, Dr Davenport stresses the importance of understanding the potential side effects of various antidepressants on the aging cardiovascular system.
