Correctly used, laboratory tests can be very helpful in establishing diagnosis and directing treatment. However, as the authors describe, they can also be overused, such as when thorough history taking would suffice, and results can be misinterpreted, such as when the investigator does not consider the effects of prevalence, sensitivity, and specificity. This article reviews the use of laboratory tests with emphasis on making the best choice for economy and efficiency.
