Ergotism is a condition characterized by intense, generalized vasoconstriction of small and large blood vessels. The infrequency with which it is encountered makes ergot poisoning a formidable diagnostic challenge, like many other rare entities. In this article, the authors present a case of ergotism masquerading as arteritis and discuss the pathophysiology, presenting symptoms and signs, keys to diagnosis, and suggested treatment.
