Malignant tumors can usually be identified by certain characteristics found on microscopic examination of their cells. Dr Stanley describes a safe and inexpensive method of obtaining these cells that causes the patient little more discomfort than having a blood sample drawn. Properly performed and interpreted, fine-needle aspiration biopsy can provide accurate preoperative diagnosis in 80% to 90% of cancers. The best techniques to use to attain such success are described, and illustrated case reports show the practical application of the procedure.
