Barrett's esophagus is a premalignant condition that should be suspected in any patient presenting with signs and symptoms of chronic reflux esophagitis. The condition itself is asymptomatic, so a high index of suspicion in patients with reflux symptoms is the key to diagnosis. In this article, Drs Wilson and Arnstein review the history, incidence, and clinical presentation of Barrett's esophagus and discuss diagnostic and treatment methods.
