Although it is not unusual to see elderly patients who are anemic, the condition is not necessarily a correlate of aging. Instead, as Dr Stander explains, elderly patients are probably anemic because of their increased susceptibility to systemic insults that result in anemia. He describes the several categories of anemia and possible causes. Useful therapy (ie, in addition to treatment of the underlying disorder) is addressed as well.
