Issues in long-term management

Patients with protracted depression deserve a thorough diagnostic evaluation and a treatment plan that includes periodic follow-up. In some cases, long-term pharmacologic maintenance therapy is essential to prevent relapse and to enhance the quality of life. The authors of this article discuss the problems in treating chronic depression and include a case report that illustrates the importance of long-term care.
