In cases of abdominal trauma, diagnostic peritoneal lavage helps determine whether immediate laparotomy is needed and may spare an already compromised patient an unnecessary operation. Lavage is easily performed with a minimum of equipment and is safe in experienced hands. Dr Feied discusses indications and contraindications for the procedure, recommended techniques, interpretation of results, and patient management.
