Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a crippling disease of young adults. Despite years of research, its cause is still unknown. Dr Gorelick provides an update on current theories of etiology and on studies attempting to prove or disprove them. One such theory is that exposure to a virus early in life causes MS years later. An important factor is where a person lives, since risk of contracting MS generally increases with distance from the equator and decreases with migration from a high- to low-risk area early in life.
