When is it serious?

Joint pain is a common complaint in children but seldom a symptom of serious joint disease. How can you tell whether a child with a painful knee has “growing pains” or a more serious joint disease, such as Lyme disease, rheumatic fever, or juvenile rheumatoid arthritis? As Dr Nelson explains, all that you really need are a thorough history, careful physical examination, and a few simple tests.
