Oral and pharyngeal candidal infections are common, and they present with a wide range of clinical appearances. In immunosuppressed patients, oral candidiasis may progress to extensive regional involvement and systemic infection, which may result in death. Because of the potential seriousness of candidiasis, early recognition and management of the infection are important Dr Epstein emphasizes the role of topical agents in preventing and treating oral and pharyngeal candidiasis.
