Just 15 years ago, Lyme disease and the spirochete that causes it, Borrelia burgdorferi, were unknown. Today, the disease has been reported on four continents. Dr Hamilton explains how the spirochete has spread so rapidly and why its range may continue to grow. He discusses the three stages of Lyme disease and the signs and symptoms in each and recommends protective measures for the hiker or hunter who is likely to be exposed to ticks that transmit the disease.
