How to help patients modify eating habits and reduce cholesterol

Media attention linking high cholesterol and heart disease has prompted many Americans to have their serum cholesterol levels measured. For those with a total cholesterol value above 200 mg/dL, dietary lipid-lowering therapy may be essential. The authors of this article provide specific guidelines for helping such patients change their eating behavior, lower their serum cholesterol values, and thus reduce the risk for coronary artery disease. As “team leader,” the primary care physician plays a key role in educating patients and implementing therapy.
