Chronic hepatitis is an unremitting disease estimated to affect 5% of the world's population. Known causes include viruses and drugs, but most cases have an unknown cause. Although chronic hepatitis may be suspected from laboratory and clinical evidence, percutaneous liver biopsy is necessary to differentiate chronic persistent from chronic active hepatitis.
