Malignant hyperthermia is an uncommon condition that has been linked to some inhalational anesthetics and some muscle relaxants used during anesthesia. Patients present with life- threatening high fever, muscle rigidity, acidosis, and hyperkalemia. Death may quickly follow if the condition is not properly identified and treated. Dr Larew reviews the clinical presentation, pathophysiology, and treatment strategy, as well as patterns of inheritance and methods of preventive screening.
