Effects of illness on thyroid function tests

Serious illness can adversely affect the results of thyroid function tests. Consequently, the clinician needs to be able to distinguish the euthyroid sick syndrome from intrinsic thyroid disorders and resist the temptation to intervene. Dr Felicetta describes the changes in thyroid metabolism that can be expected in severe illness and explains the subsequent alterations in thyroid function tests.
