Diseases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are common in young, sexually active women. While the initial genitourinary infection may be mild (or asymptomatic) and chronic, endometritis and salpingitis are common sequelae. Ascending chlamydial infection has recently been recognized as a cause of various abdominal disorders, including perihepatitis, periappendicitis, perisplenitis, peritonitis, ascites, and small-bowel obstruction. Dr Baumgardner reviews the pathophysiology and clinical presentations of chlamydial abdominal pain syndromes.
