Thiamine deficiency neuropathy, which often goes unrecognized, is inordinately prevalent among the homeless, the impoverished, recent Third World immigrants, alcoholics, and former prisoners of war. As discussed by the authors, prolonged thiamine deficiency yields a multisystem disease affecting primarily the heart and nervous system. Symptoms usually resolve with replenishment of thiamine, but chronic neurologic sequelae occur in a small number of patients.
