Tuberculosis has been considered treatable for decades, but 1,670 people died of the disease in the United States in 1986. An influx of immigrants from certain parts of the world and new immunodeficiency disorders contribute to an increased incidence. However, drug-resistant tuberculosis is also on the rise. Dr Iseman points out that he sees patients with this type of tuberculosis every day in his practice. He explains how drug resistance comes about and lists treatment recommendations from the American Thoracic Society and the Centers for Disease Control to avoid this problem.
