How to evaluate murmurs in children

Heart murmurs are common in school-age children, and most are innocent. However, congenital heart disease may be asymptomatic, and the preschool screening examination can be an important means of detecting previously undiagnosed defects. The authors discuss methods that primary care physicians can use to distinguish innocent heart murmurs from various congenital heart defects.
