The first few hours after a heart attack are critical to patient outcome. During this period, the course of events can be altered by disrupting the clotting process. Drs Peterson and Emmot discuss current use of thrombolytic and nonthrombolytic therapies to limit infarct size and thus reduce the risk of death in acute myocardial infarction.
