Genital warts have plagued people for centuries, and the ancient Greeks had already recognized them to be a venereal disease. What has been proven only recently is that certain types of these lesions, which can take one of several forms with varying appearance and severity, are premalignant. The authors describe the appearance and microscopic pattern of six forms of human papillomavirus infection, explain detection of the virus, and discuss methods of treatment of men and women that will reduce spread of the virus to sexual partners and thus the reservoir for infectivity.
