In most cases, solitary pulmonary nodules are detected on routine chest x-ray films. More than half of these lesions in smokers over age 50 turn out to be malignant. Because lung cancer grows quickly, the workup should be simple and expeditious. Drs Hix and Aaron describe the diagnostic and staging techniques they use, which are thorough but do not waste time. Their perspective as surgeons is valuable for primary care physicians who remain involved in their patient's care during this critical period.
