Social phobia

Recognizing the distress signals

Primary care physicians who are able to recognize patients with social phobia can help them avoid considerable distress. Such patients often go to extraordinary lengths to avoid certain social situations, and in extreme cases patients become totally isolated. Drs Christenson and Mackenzie describe the symptoms of social phobia, compare it with other anxiety disorders, and discuss behavioral and pharmacologic therapies that may lead to successful management.
