Iatrogenic disease is well recognized in clinical practice, but its magnitude may not be fully appreciated. Because primary care physicians are responsible for initial patient contact and complex evaluation and treatment, an increased awareness of iatrogenic complications is essential. Dr Jacobs discusses the causes of iatrogenic illness and reviews the special risks in hospitalized and elderly patients.
