Although many people automatically think lung cancer patients are headed toward an early death, surgery can be curative for many with stage I and II disease and for some with certain types of stage IIIA disease. Besides the clinical stage of the disease, the extent of pulmonary resection required and the functional reserve of the patient determine whether surgical intervention should be attempted. Dr Landreneau describes staging by size, location, and changes on x-ray film and also discusses when adjuvant irradiation and chemotherapy should be considered to control recurrence.
