Before referring a patient to a surgeon for repair of groin hernia, the primary care physician must decide if the benefits of surgery outweigh the risks. Others, however, are more prone to incarceration and strangulation and should be repaired promptly to avoid an emergency situation. Dr Berliner reviews the various types of groin hernia and discusses when repair can and cannot wait.
